Laura Nelson MS MPH PhD(c) is an advisor for VTPHI, and has served as an evaluator for the state-wide Accountable Communities for Health model implementation. In addition to her experience in program evaluation she has worked across various areas of public health. Her research interests include rural health and access/barriers to treatment, building and supporting strong community collaborations, justice system involvement at the intersection of motherhood and substance use disorder (SUD), advancing gendered approaches to SUD treatment, policy and barriers surrounding reentry for parents, and kinship care for SUD impacted families. Laura has been a lecturer for Virginia Tech’s Human Development and Family Science Department during her graduate studies, presented federally funded research at national level conferences,  and is completing her PhD dissertation in maternal SUD
